In 1666, fire destroyed much of medieval London. In the wake of the inferno, Sir Christopher Wren (and others) began construction of a new London, but included a simple monument to commemorate the Great Fire. After an 18-month renovation,The Monument. is once again open to visitors who are willing to climb its 311 stairs to get a terrific view of the city.
